This collection of porcelain art in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China is a breath-taking sight of ingenuity – the Sanbao Art Museum!
Sanbao village, a scenic place not far from the Central City of Jingdezhen in China, hosts a nascent, dynamic, porcelain-centric hub with porcelain artists’ studios and porcelain-related industries, causing a highly competitive environment, where it takes great ingenuity and endless efforts to be the best. The relationship between the artists and their creation is sort of romantic, like the feeling of first love: indirect probing, exploring, negotiating and subtle manoeuvring. And the transformation in the pottery kilns is like the process of developing films – full of uncertainties; like the photographers’ having projected their best imaginations onto the films, but results will be unravelled only after the mandatory stint in the dark room!

But it is these very risks and uncertainties that mandate detail and delicacy; brain power juxtaposed against a passionate song in the heart… romanticism at its best!

An art museum in this milieu not just builds an interactive space to encourage reciprocal communication between visitors and the space, both emotionally and behaviourally, it inculcates sensitivity and imagination. The museum is a visually linear shape, 150m long, but the visiting flow is nonlinear, with visitors having multiple paths to explore. The purpose is to boost serendipity between people and spaces. Architecture creates the atmosphere with which visitors have personal connections. Walls, the most important part at shaping exhibition space and atmosphere, are made of rammed earth to offer a poetic feeling. The main passage is a long transparent space, 100m; around which rammed-earth walls, 4m high, grow from earth.

Major materials used in building the museum, such as rammed earth, titanium zinc panels and travertine, will be eroded by time. This process of erosion is like the fermentation of wine, time gives its unique flavour. In addition, Sanbao village naturally produces unique soil, slightly red in colour, so the continuous loam walls are built with local clay, delivering a certain familiarity and tension.

Experiences vary, when visitors walk through different areas, attracted by the outstretched eaves after the woods area. The sound from the creeks relaxes, whilst what lies ahead leads visitors further into a cryptic but joyful world. Every tour becomes a story between visitors and architecture – a mix of discovery, expectation, waiting, anxiety, disappointment and joy. Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

For wildlife lovers, a vacation in the Galapagos is often an old dream and a real “bucket list” experience. This remote island off the coast of Ecuador is home to some of the most unique wildlife on Earth, and offers the opportunity for some very close encounters. For those who want to take advantage of most opportunities to take animal photos, some specific tips from experts can help.
Tips for Photography at Holiday Galapagos Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

There are many generic tips for photographing wildlife (including the most basic, ie patient), but there are also some specific ones to capture great images of these remote island animals.

Be prepared

This suggestion has a double meaning: You need to be prepared in terms of equipment, but also at a situational level. Taking the right camera and accessories is essential, and SLRs with interchangeable lenses will produce far superior results to the iPhone, however up-to-date the model. The wildlife in the archipelago is unbelievably fearless, so there is no need for long focal length and long fixed lenses, but if you are serious, short and medium lens combinations are recommended. As a guide, consider (at least) the 18mm-70mm lens and the 100mm-400mm. Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

Another aspect of preparation is getting ready to get “money fired” without too much notice. Wild wildlife, however, and animals will not wait for you to focus, change openings and frame the scene perfectly – even though the Giant Tortoise Galapagos may be an exception. Read it every time and frankly, keeping your eyes peeled so you can take advantage of the situation as it appears.

Lighting

Due to the geographical position of the archipelago at the equator, the sun rises and sets rapidly, spends much of its time just above the head. This results in harsh and top-lit conditions that are often less conducive to capturing wildlife images. What you should aim for is low-side lighting, which creates greater interest in texture and shaded contours. Without the benefits of an artificial studio lighting, the only real solution is to get up early before the sun reaches overhead, or later at night when it goes down. An added bonus of this is that you can get some spectacular and dramatic pictures by using sunrise or sunset to give the backlight on your subject. Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

Expose

Even if you set your SLR for automatic exposure, lighting and conditions in the archipelago are often beyond the reach of the most advanced camera metering system. For example, bright white plumage in Nazca Booby perched on black volcanic rocks will cause the camera to glow for darker areas, and then highlight it more deeply. A good tip is to use the +/- function on your camera, which will override the meter and fix one or two stops to expose the bird and not the rocks.

Think laterally

In addition to the technical aspects, the most important advice of the knowing experts is to think out of the box and actually take advantage of the incredible opportunities that you will encounter on Galapagos holidays. Do not just follow the crowd and photograph the animals from a static point of view – go down to the sand with Sally Lightfoot Crabs, ride high on rocks with the Marine Iguana, and cross into shallow rivers with weird Sea Lions (obviously keeping your camera protected). Being creative with angles is one of the surest ways to open up to this once-in-a-lifetime image.

Turned Good to Great

Meanwhile, for some people, the Galapagos holiday is quite a gift in itself, for others, catching amazing photographs is a very important aspect. Wildlife photography can, in essence, be a very challenging quest. And while being in the right place at the right time can reap amazing rewards, following a few tips to take advantage of those “timely, right place” moments can make the difference between good and good photos. All You Need is Lava: A Volcanic Hawaiian Holiday

All You Need is Lava: A Volcanic Hawaiian Holiday

Endlessly fascinating for their beauty and danger, volcanoes have thrilled us human beings for as long as we can remember. And if lazy days on the beach just aren’t for you, why not try a holiday with a little more excitement and head to the active volcanoes of Hawaii? In fact, the archipelago of Hawaii was created through volcanic activity and this fiery heritage is everywhere you look in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, USA. Travel insurance experts, however, say it’s safe terrain.
In the park you can get so close to active volcanoes that you can feel the heat from erupting gases and steam as you walk across lava fields in search of indigenous art…

Here are three expeditions you should make in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park if you want to experience the power of volcanoes first hand:

The Long One

The Crater Rim Trail is a fantastic trail for those who love their hikes with just a soupcon of danger! The trail is over 11 miles long and works itself around the summit of Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Hawaii. Thousands of years old, Kilauea has been active non-stop for the last thirty years. The trail winds through contrasting sceneries of lush, green rainforests and sterile, steaming rockscapes. As you walk, look out for the earth cracks and vents that break the ground’s surface.

If you’re interested in the local culture you’ll want to know that Kilauea is believed to be the home of Pele – goddess of fire and creator of Hawaii. As the name Fire Goddess suggests, the area can be unpredictable and dangerous. With this in mind, be prepared for sudden trail closures. It’s also always advisable to stay on the marked paths and keep away from edges. Make sure you get out USA travel insurance before visiting – in case of an accident you are safely covered.

The Short One

Ha’akulamanu Trail, or the Sulphur Banks Trail, is much shorter, coming in at just over a mile in length. However, you know what they say: good things come in small packages! The intriguing landscape is devoid of trees as the intense underground heat makes it impossible for most roots to grow. The area is known for the beautiful crystal formations formed by escaping gases over many years. The gas is released through earth vents along with groundwater which is turned into steam and hangs in the air.

Just a warning – it does not smell good here! Rotten eggs anyone?

The Arty One

It’s not often that you can enjoy a nature trail and take in some local art on your way. However, nothing about this art is ordinary. The indigenous artwork found cut into Pu’u Loa, or the “Hill of Long Life”, is carved into the cooled volcanic lava of this sacred site. How amazing is that? There are over 23,000 petroglyphs showing a stunning variety of geometric patterns, human representations and images of the travels of the people of Hawaii around the island. A boardwalk allows visitors to easily view the artwork whilst protecting it and maintaining respect for the site.

TOP TIP: Before you embark on any journey, check your insurance! Designed with explorers in mind, Let’s Go Insure’s USA travel insurance will keep you covered on all your wild ventures.

Ready to have a blast? I’ll see you in Hawaii!

Create Your Own Gift Card

Create Your Own Gift Card

If you need to send someone a special halo, but you have a budget or can only send a gift in the form of an envelope, then making a card with your own two sneaky hands is the way to go. Making cards easy and affordable. Even if you live outside of cereal you can use a cereal box as a backrest for your card and an old pasta to create an art inspired noodle.
If you still feel uninspired, we’ve created a list of ideas (with pictures,) that we offer you from our experience, it will help keep your creative stream flowing. So grab some scissors and glue, wear stylish aprons and let’s fall cunning!

Create Your Own Gift Card

TAPE LONG MIX

After you buy your CD player there is no space in your life for music tapes anymore. The little fingers that music plays magically are now another piece of impractical plastic in your bedroom garbage pile. Today you will free them from the dumpster and refresh them again into art.

Draw a picture of your receiver’s base on the front of your card. Take off your ribbon and cut a haircut that reflects your current recipient’s key. Now re-create your friend’s hair with a piece of ribbon attached to your card. You are now drafting a craft.

BITS, BOBS & BUTTONS

Make a visit to the local charity shop and find jewelry, buttons, and old beads to create your masterpiece. Try and find colors like colors so you can make your drawing into a coherent shape.

Draw an outline of your image on your card. You may want to do faces or even just a balloon for a birthday greeting card. Fill your objects with the colors you choose and then create a background with different colors. If you use the gift recipient’s face as an inspiration, use different beads and color buttons to create colors and light. If you can draw this one, you can get the crafting genius badge.

KOLASE

Take an old magazine, a pair of scissors and some glue. From here the options are endless – endless in the use of these three items. You can cut the pretty picture you like and make landscape or just cut the color and create your own miracle. Magazines allow you to cut a bit of text too, so maybe you can add something smart about the effects of gravity when you’re forty years old in the body. Everyone loves good jokes about their age.

SEWING

Why not make a card with a needle and thread? With a single color of wool or yarn you can create a heart-like shape for Valentine’s or Christmas tree shapes. Outline the shape you want to do on your card with a pencil. Then stir the hole through the outline of the card with your needle and remove the pencil. Now, attach the color you use to your needle and sew the color through the hole you have made until you fill the shape. Easy!

SPARKLING

We all love sparkling things. If it makes us happy. That means glitter is a perfect addition to a birthday card where you want to add a sweet comment like ‘You make me sparkle’. Make a shape on your card and paint your glue inside the shape line. Add glitter (free). Remove the excess and present it with a flourish. Create Your Own Gift Card

A Lad’s Ski Break in Morzine

A Lad’s Ski Break in Morzine

Listen up skiers! Summer’s heading for the exit and you know what that means. You, your best mates and some ski runs to conquer…
That’s all nice and simple, but there’s still the tricky choice of where to go. There are loads of great ski resorts to choose from in Europe, each with their own incredible set of pistes and happening après-ski scene. Want my advice? For me, the only way is Morzine in the huge 650km Portes du Soleil area: a scintillating selection of runs (ranging from intermediate to expert), and off the snow entertainment that’s perfect for both party animals and more laid-back customers. You can thank me later.

Ripping Après Ski

When the sun sets on Morzine it becomes one hell of a party town. And because it’s not too big, wherever the night starts your next port of call is probably just around the corner. These are my picks (discovered through detailed ‘research’) of the best joints.

• The Tibetan Café – start the evening’s entertainment at this energetic spot. • Bar Robinson – one of Morzine’s most popular bars is a great place to take things up a notch. • Dixie Bar – chillers will dig this easy-going sports bar and its live music. • The Cavern – want to party into the small hours? Look no further. • Le Crepu – open till 2am and just right for winding down after a heavy night.

Some Awesome Skiing

Morzine is in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, meaning you have the pick of as much as 650km of pistes, just waiting to be tackled. With this selection of the best areas to go, there’s bound to be something for everyone in the group.

• Avoriaz – freestylers rejoice! This nearby resort has six terrain parks as well as plenty of gnarly high-altitude powder runs to strut your stuff. • Le Pleney – close to Morzine and with a great spread of blues, challenging reds and steep wide runs, Le Pleney is perfect for intermediates in search of real challenges. • Les Gets – high-altitude powder runs are the name of the game here.

And Still More Fun

If you fancy a day or two’s break from the skiing but can’t bring yourself to abandon the snow all together, then why not have a go at snowmobiling (either solo or with a guide depending on your confidence), ice skating or snowshoeing? Even winter paragliding’s an option. Believe me when I say it’s completely unlike anything you’ll have done before.

Morzine also has an active entertainment and leisure scene off the slopes. With a cinema, indoor swimming pool, ice-hockey games every week and spa treatments there’s no chance of boredom striking.

How to Get There

Getting to Morzine with Shuttle Direct is like going down a green run. Easy. Let’s look deeply at some of the most romantic resorts in the world. Starry-Eyed Ski: Relive Romance in Resorts
Kitzbühel, Austria

While it may be famous for Hahnenkamm, – one of the most grueling and dangerous races on the World Cup circuit – Kitzbühel also has a softer side. As a well established community, and not just a commercial resort, this medieval town is full of Tirolean charm. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the pedestrian downtown, where the brightly painted buildings are lined with towering church towers. Go into one of the cozy restaurants for Glühwein, and your romantic trip will be over.

Cormayeur, Italy

On the Italian side of Mont Blanc, this traditional Italian village is bustling with activity. Via Roma in the center of the village is lined with shops, restaurants and bars. Eating and partying are some of the main attractions in Cormayeur – in fact, many Italians come here for that purpose alone. For others, this means a calm and quiet slope to enjoy.

And, if you’re looking for something a little different, what could be more romantic than seeing Mont Blanc with a cable car? Skyway Monte Bianco takes you to the highest peak peak in Europe, from which you will get the most beautiful views of the Alps.

Champéry, Switzerland

This rustic village wooden chalets can be directly out of The Sound of Music. While the village itself may be small, it is linked to twelve resorts in the intertwined Portes du Soleil area, so you will not lose access to the slopes.

One of the most dramatic features of Champéry is the horizon. Wherever you are in the village, you will look up to see the rocky peak of Dents du Midi. With a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, you will be greeted by the locals like an old friend. This is a beautiful sight for a romantic getaway for two people.

Chamonix, France

Last but not least is the resort of Chamonix. Probably the most romantic ski destination in Europe, Chamonix offers an activity to captivate every couple. The panoramic view of Mont Blanc set the scene for a truly romantic atmosphere.

For anyone who enjoys good food, a remote 250 years old farmhouse, Les Vieilles Luges is the perfect destination for a starry dining experience. Soak up the atmosphere of real wooden beams and wood fireplaces, taste some delicious alpine dishes and really reconnect with your partner. If you are looking for a short break from the slopes, dog sledding is an ideal pairing activity. Either sit on the sled and enjoy the ride, or impress your lover by trying your hand to lead the pack!

After a day of adventurous action, why not relax in one of Chamonix’s ski huts? Alternatively, you can relax in the ice cave, sweat in the sauna or enjoy one of the many luxurious couple treatments on offer.

And voila: this resort will surely lure you and your special someone. From embracing in your catered ski chalet to exploring snowy snowy environments, you are in a holiday that will revolutionize your definition of romance.

Upgrade Your Pro Ski Gear in La Plagne

Upgrade Your Pro Ski Gear in La Plagne

No matter how up to date your ski gear is, there is always room to upgrade. If you are anything like me, then only the latest and best equipment will do, and you know that hav-ing the most current gear is a great way to optimise your performance on the slopes. It is also the best way to turn heads!
In my opinion, the best place to upgrade is always at a ski resort, instead of back home or online. La Plagne is an excellent place to do this, as there are many fully stocked shops. What’s more, it is also one of the best resorts for a holiday with superb skiing and the option of booking a luxury chalet. La Plagne is a much better place to upgrade than back home for the following four reasons:

1. Experts on Hand

For me, the primary reason for upgrading at the resort is that you can get the opinion of experts to find the best and latest gear that is right for you. It can be daunting to shop for skis, boots, helmets, clothing and other gear when there is so much variety. An expert will be able to guide you through what is available, and help you to find the right equipment for your age, gender, height, weight and personal preference.

2. Range

Another reason to buy at the resort is because of the wide range that’s available to you. Modern ski gear is catered to different terrains and personal tastes, so it is helpful to be in the store and browse a selection. This could be cross-country skis, race skis, mini skis, slope, all-mountain or another type.

3. Try Outs

A huge benefit of buying in La Plagne is that many places will allow you to try out the gear before making a purchase. You never really know how the equipment will perform until you are on the mountain, which is why buying at home is a huge gamble that may not pay off.

4. Shops

La Plagne has a selection of sports shops that are full of the latest gear and have friendly staff to assist you. Here are a few of the best!

Zig Zag – This is a very friendly sports store that’s run by the welcoming and helpful Yannick, who will happily spend time with you to find the right gear. This is very handy, as they have a huge selection of products, stocking all of the major brands like Stockli, Drake, Fisher and Northwave.

Elpro – There are four Elpro stores around the resort, so chances are there will be one close to your chalet. La Plagne’s most experienced skiers come here to shop, as the store always has the very latest equipment and offer everything that you need to hit the slopes in style.

Guidon Sports – Guidon Sports is a popular shop which is conveniently located right in the heart of La Plagne. Guidon also offers high-end clothing and ski equipment with the chance to make huge savings with the generous discounts usually on offer.

Belle Plagne Sports – Belle Plagne Sports renews their skis, snowboards, clothes, boots and accessories each year, so you will always find the latest here. There are three stores around the area, and each has equipment for all abilities. There are plenty of staff members on hand to offer sound advice.

La Plagne is a superb place to upgrade your gear, and it is also a great choice for skiing and relaxing. Thanks to the option of booking a luxury chalet, La Plagne attracts avid skiers from all around the world – so if you are looking to buy the latest gear, this is the best place to do so.
